The 60-30-10 Rule

Do you know the 60-30-10 rules?  Learn them and then occasionally break them! What's that you ask? It's a formula from interior design experts: 60 percent of the room should be a dominate color, 30 percent of the room should be your attribute secondary color and 10 percent of the room should be an accent color such as accessories like wall art and a vase. Why? In every well decorated space there should be a level of balance that allows the eye to dance around that space comfortably; engaging from one focal to the next. Still confused?

Let's take this guy for example...

  • 60% of his suit is navy
  • 30% of his tie is scarlet
  • 10% of his accents are kiwi

Now, continue to do the same thing with this space. This time you give me answer to the question below in the comments. I would love to see how good you are at this just from the above example.

  • 60% of this room is?
  • 30% of the room are shades of?
  • 10% of the the room is?

The dominate color's job is to stand out by giving the room a particular mood or feeling. Your visual pallet will begin to tie the look together by adding the next step in your secondary color. This will then created a visual contrast between the two.

I enjoy breaking the rules so don't feel locked in to this step by step. However, do use this method to help you achieve a balance look especially for beginners. The decorating rules are constantly being broken as new creative designers pose their visual luxury gift on our eyes.
